Methods to Safeguard Your Eyes against Sunshine

19/03/2010 12:47

People takes of their skin in summer, but not for the eyes. In fact, studies have shown that ultraviolet light can cause keratitis, cataracts, retinal damage and other eye diseases, which cannot be ignored. Hence, for health sake, eyes deserve our special attention.

Do not look directly at the sun under hot weather. Eyes are very fragile. Direct view to sun for a while may lead to temporary giddiness. One may suffer from pain, tears, inflammation and blurred vision if he/she looks up to sun for a long time.

The eyes which can absorb many ultraviolet lights with different wavelengths are most sensitive to UV. among which the UV with wavelength of 280 nm is of the most damage to cornea, which can induce UV gland conjunctivitis. While, those with 290-400nm wavelength may cause injury to lens and even result in cataract.

Analysis proclaims that the longer you bask in the sun every day, the more likely you will get cataract, and the rate would be one hour to 10%. So, what can we do to prevent these eye disease at usual?

It is effective to protect yourself from the sun by employing hats with broad brim, parasol and prescription sunglasses with anti-UV function. What is worth noting is that the sunglasses must have a good quality. Sunglasses of poor quality can’t help in protection but result in injury to eyes.

You should choose a pair of UV-proof eyeglass frames for yourself in Spring and Summer. It has been certified by many medical studies that it is not wise to choose sunglasses with too dark lenses which may leave more UV rays to eyes. People wearing contact lenses can buy UV-protective ones which are able to block 90% ultraviolet radiation. It would be safer to add a pair of bifocals.

The sunlight at noon is the strongest, which can do great harm to both skin and eyes. You'd better not go out at noon.
